Member Profile - Brenda Varhola As a child, Brenda's would spend hours watching and trying to capture wild birds. She would prop a cardboard box up with a stick, put bread underneath as bait, and wait behind a nearby bush ready to jerk the rope that would cause the trap to fall. She reports that she never caught anything except for poison ivy, but in looking back can see that she developed a lifelong interest in bird watching. In 1989, she purchased her first canary at a pet store. She was amazed that the canary sang with such variety and she enjoyed him for several years. When he died, she started searching for a replacement. When researching which breed of canary she wanted, she determined that the American Singer was the one for her because, in her opinion, it was the ultimate songster .Her interest in American Singers sparked and ignited when she contacted Roger Stroman, a breeder and exhibitor of American Singer canaries. She soon found out that Roger was ready and willing to answer questions about canaries, in general, and American Singers, in particular. As a result of Roger's encouragement, Brenda set up a bird room in her basement and purchased foundation stock to begin a canary breeding program. Her interest has blossomed to include two bird rooms, a dedicated bird room "kitchen", and a website devoted to American Singer canaries and this hobby. You can find her website at www.ariafromabirdcage.com and she invites your questions, inquiries, or comments. Brenda says, "I am hoping to "pay forward" the good advice and mentoring that was so generously given to me by Roger Stroman, and encourage more folks to enjoy this wonderful hobby." She lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and is an active member of several canary clubs. She has Canaries for Sale - Nice American Singers for sale. Males for $100 and Hens for $50.
